Greetings from Africa!
It’s been three months since our last update, so this one is way overdue.
I just saw an email Jeff just sent to his dear buddy Steve and I thought I’d copy and paste a portion of it so you could hear a bit of his heart:
…“So many things at the same time: Our daughter being married was such a joy of a lifetime, yet leaving so quickly was difficult to process the event…my father passing with unusual circumstances for me; leaving the country and having to make a decision not to return was very exhausting for me spiritually and emotionally…buying a home in a third world country and adapting to the culture in practical ways (outside Iris base bubble) was like a perpetual rollercoaster ride! With all this, relationally exposing ourselves to new and deeper friendships with the work here brought new meaning to Paul’s words, “not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as coming from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God.”
We are blessed! We wouldn’t have it any other way. Dad is faithful and He is leading us into new things. For instance, I am teaching the national pastors three times a week. This is a real stretch for me, but the pastors make it easier for me, beings as humble as they are, they receive the word with real eagerness.
I am slowing down a lot more. After thirty three years of 9 to 5 my personality is finally getting a long deep massage! I look back over the last couple of years and I am so thankful for the decisions we made along the way to get us where we are now. I could not have planned it in a million years! We are fixing up our beloved thatched roof home…no surprise to those of you who know us well. Jeff made a bamboo fence (most fences are made of bamboo here) and of course, it’s the nicest design I’ve seen for a bamboo fence. Jeff just poured a concrete driveway to keep down the dust (there are no windows on our home, just screens with safety bars so much dust comes in every day.) Now were putting small bits of marble slab (like tile) on it to dress it up. There is a big marble factory nearby that sells rejects for very cheap. A neighbor of ours told us that we can’t do this and it won’t work as a driveway, blah, blah, blah. I had to bite my tongue, but along with a twinkle in my eye was thinking to myself, “You have no idea who you’re talking to. My husband can make just about anything work and take something that looks impossible to work with and make it lovely beyond compare! You’ll be eating humble pie for dinner when Jeff’s completed the job.” Glad I kept my thoughts to myself and I’m happy to report that this man is now complementing Jeff on the task before us!
We’d like to see this property used to its fullest. Our desire is for the missionaries to have a place of their own to come to and rest for a time. There is enough room on our property to build another home. We are waiting on God for provision. We see how beneficial it would be for them to get away from the hustle and bustle of the base and rest for awhile. The missionaries here are amazing folks. I have much admiration for them. They are really unsung heroes, working devotedly with Iris orphans and widows. Others work on building and construction at our base – which is a constant challenge because of a lack of the community having been taught labor skills and lack of proper equipment to do the job (Jeff bought a hammer and the first time it was used it split in two! Another missionary bought a shovel and first time he used it the shovel went into the ground and stayed there as it broke on first dig!) Others help with church planting and outreaches, accounting, hospitality (for our many visitors), etc.
We went to South Africa in August to renew our visa. We caught a flight to Maputo and then took a bus to South Africa. Missionary friends who are a part of Iris offered us their home while they were traveling. We went on safari to famous Kruger National Park. It was a thrill of a lifetime…makes a zoo look awfully dull and boring in comparison. We saw a vast amount of animals roaming free in the wild. I kept thinking about God and being in awe of Him during this 2 day safari. It was easy to sense Him out in the bush and wondered how people could not believe in God when they come to Kruger. We also were blessed by the finest hospitality in Nelspruit, South Africa. Folks we’ve never met before had us over for dinner 4 times in the space of a week. Richard and Sheila have done quite a bit of sailing around the world. What great conversation, food and delight they brought us. I almost knew at once upon meeting them that it wouldn’t be the last. True kindred spirits is what they are. It looks like we’ll be meeting up with them again next year as they are possibly flying out our way in Feb. Friends from other nations widen my vision of the world. I have so much to learn and traveling and meeting new people can be a great education if I let it.
It’s really quite something that I now enjoy traveling. All my life I never had a desire to hop on a plane to go somewhere and had to have “all my ducks in a row” before I would go anywhere…I was very insecure to go places that I wasn’t somewhat sure about…I felt afraid and very vulnerable in this situation…what a change in me...Now I go places without reservations, very little money and no clue at times where we will lay our heads at night. I ask God to keep me curious, that He would continue to fan a flame of wonder in my heart. He then leads us to marvelous roads that bring Him and us delight. When the path is difficult, we don’t mind too much the bumps in the road, as God continually reminds us that the journey is just as important for us as the destination. All I can say is that what He has done in my heart is a really, really big miracle…for me personally it’s somewhat analogous to the blind seeing or the lame walking.
The next Holy Given School starts in several weeks. We’ll have more students than the last one and less than half the staff we had before…we’ve got our work cut out for us! Staying in the presence of God is so necessary for us. Without His presence there isn’t much joy and peace. It’s abiding in His presence that makes God and life enjoyable.
I like for you to picture my days, so I’ll end with this. We try to go jogging often here. It’s been fun to now have other missionaries who are jogging with us along a dirt road which has views of the ocean. I bring my IPOD (thank you Sam & Sarah for that amazing gift!) as I jog with these 20 and early 30 yr olds. I get really energized as they can’t keep up with Jeff and me as we jog! Oh, how this feeds my ego! As I outrun these “kids” I often listen to Frank Sinatra on the IPOD singing “You make me feel so young” with a big, generous smile on my face. I probably look drunk as the endorphins kick in this almost 50 yr old body and I’m bobbing my head to the music. I think the villagers get quite a kick out of me! I love the childlike spirit of the women villagers who sometimes grab my hand or put their arms around me and jog with me for a minute or two.
The hardships and difficulties here are numerous, as you can only imagine. A scripture I’ve been meditating on almost daily is words that Paul wrote in Acts 20:22 “But none of these things move me: nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy.” What a different perspective Paul had than my thinking and probably most of us...not counting his life dear to himself, so that he may finish his race with joy! There’s a huge canyon of difference between Paul’s writings and many of the self help books you pick up in stores these days.
We always feel encouraged to hear you tell us that you are praying for us. Your prayers and support is so vitally important to us…you really are a crucial part of what God is doing here! Please continue to pray for us and all the missionaries and national staff of Iris.

We continue to pray for you. It is wonderful to read your updates and to hear more personally about life in Mozambique. We would love to see all that you are doing there, including making your home lovely. I especially loved hearing about how you link it and serve Iris Min, yet you are slowing down. Perhaps that can work in that culture...wish it could work in the U.S. We saw Sarah briefly this past weekend and got to hug her. I hugged her extra tight to include not only a hug from us but one on behalf of you. It is wonderful to read your updates. Keep writing. It causes many of us to ache to come. Freedom! Aurora & Gerry

Hey dear friends, thanks for the incredible news of your new life in Africa and with the Lord. It's fantastic! I amile and wish I could hop on a plane and join you. Of course I've already told people that your little house will be transformed in no time as I've always seen you two do when you were next door, in Daly City, and up here in Wa. I love it!!!!
We are busy making our investments double so that the giving will also mulitpy. We are being blessed in this way as God has sent people to mentor us along. I have visions of making a trip to see you sometime to bring the gifts with us.
Keep lighting the Mozambique coastine with the infectious joy and enthusiasm of knowing God the Father through His Son Jesus. Gotta pick up kids. Love, Janet

So good to hear from you two and to know that you are thriving and delighting in your calling. I was actually getting online to send you an email, realizing that i forgot to let you know that i sent the candles 3 or 4 weeks ago, and there you were! You were right janet, it is quite costly to ship, something i am not accustomed to doing but see this as a small sacrifice for a very meaningful cause! Unfortunately, the candles should take 2 months to arrive. (hopefully it will be sooner!) Please let me know when you get them. Fixing up your li'l humble abode must be a fun project, afterall you two are in your element when it comes to home transformations! I am hoping you will send pics of before and after!

Your wow power leveling adventure in Iysa begins in the city of wow powerleveling Roumen. This quaint town will be your home base until around powerleveling level 20. Begin your adventure by talking to Elemental Helper Remi and get your first power leveling quest! She will give you a few instructions and then send you to Healer Julia. To locate NPCs (non-player characters) on the map, press the M button. Healer Julia is just up the wow power level steps to the right.
Once you talk with Julia wow powerlevel, she will tell you all about HP (health points - red) and SP (spirit points - blue) stones. These are used to refill your wow powerleveling health and spirit when they get low wow power leveling. You receive a few free stones from Julia when you start your adventure in Isya and can always buy more wow power leveln from her. Julia will also give you your first wow powerleveln quest – a monster hunt to kill Slimes and Mushrooms. They can be found in the forest at the edge of fiesta online town.
TIP
Before you battle fiesta online, check out your character stats. Hit “C” or click the Character icon in the bottom right corner of the fiesta online gold screen. You will see the following character attributes:
STR (strength) – helps melee attacks and defense last chaos
DEX (dexterity) – increases ranged damage, chance to dodge attacks, and lastchaos attack speed
END (endurance) – increases hit points
INT (intelligence) – increases magic damage and last chaos gold resistance
SPR (spirit) – increases spirit points, chance to critical hit and spell cooldown
Your character begins the game with one free stat point and will receive an additional stat point for every increase in lastchaos gold level.
Equip your last chaos gold weapon and get ready to help save Isya! Hit the “I” key or click the Inventory icon in the lower right portion of the lastchaos gold screen. Your weapon will be in your inventory; right-click to equip fly for fun. To attack a flyff penya monster, double click on it. Mages start with an additional skill – the magic missile spell in their dofus skill bar. Select a monster and right-click on a spell or skill to use dofus kamas. Slain monsters often will drop items, so be sure to pick them up! Some are valuable and you can sell them to other players or NPCs.
If you get low dofus on life, use an HP stone by hitting the “Q” key or an SP stone by hitting “E”. You can also assign dofus kamas to your quick bar skills by opening your skills window, clicking on dragging them to the quick bar of your choice.
TIP
When not fighting flyff, rest in your mini house to regain health and spirit points! Hit the “H” key or click on the house icon in the bottom right corner of the game window to bring up the Mini House menu. Click the
“Rest [HOME]” button to enter your flyff penya house. If your house does not appear, move to a less crowded area or away from NPCs and try again. Press “H” again to exit your mini house.
TIP
Keep all the NosTale gold Summoned Beast Leather you find! These are valuable early in the game and can be sold to other players. A lot of the NosTale gold you will find while fighting enemies can also be used for crafting NosTale items later in the game. You can choose up to two crafting professions. Keep the items you find that relate to your chosen crafting professions, and sell the rest to make money. For instance, keep the ones related to potions and scrolls, but sell the ones relating to stones.

Sooooo good to receive your latest update...makes me long to return to Africa myself. Maybe someday. It's not even close to what it's like for you, but the Lord has just moved us into the "ghetto" of Santa Rosa, made up mostly of Mexicans and Eritreans. It's a miracle that we are there...the Lord has given us amazing favor with the owner of a 4-plex. Not only are we moving into #3 apartment, but we are the new property managers. A perfect "in" to meet all of our immediate neighbors and beyond! We are already getting to practice our Spanish as well!! This area is also a hotspot for gang activity so we are excited to move from a fairly normal life to one of adventure that is not too tame or safe! We too are in the process of renovating our living space as well, though I know that it probably won't take us quite as long to finish (even though right now it feels like it!). Already we've gotten to minister to a man who lives on our street...Jesus encountered his heart AND healed his body. And we're off...! We love you both much and look forward to both hearing more and seeing you again. Please come stay with us when you do...even if only for a few nights. Then you'll be able to say you've "stayed in the 'hood"! Rachel & James

We're out here at the barn celebrating Chris McMinn's birthday, and Sarah is showing me her new curtains, etc. It's great to read your recent update and see how much you are fulfilling your calling and enjoying being His ambassadors to Mozambique. We look forward to seeing you in a few months. In the meantime we continue to"sell off things" and create our "beautiful feet fund" in the hopes of joining you at the appointed time.
