We’ll be heading back to Mozambique on March 26th
What a gift it has been to see our family and friends. It’s always hard to say good-bye though. We left WA last week and after saying good-bye to our son Sam I cried for 2 days. We miss him already. It will be hard to say good-bye to our daughter when she and her precious husband will drop us off in San Francisco for our flight back to Africa…I’m already crying as I write this!
Sarah is pregnant and what joy that brings us…I will be so far away during this eventful time and that is not always easy to think about, but at the same time I have perfect peace as I know we’re doing exactly what God wants us to do and therefore He will be more than enough for our kids and for us!
We really do see how true it is that when you “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6: 33). I feel closer and more bonded to our kids than when we lived in America – now isn’t that just like God to make that happen when we live to make Him happy!
A friend asked me the other day how I felt about going back to Africa. I told her that I am excited and scared at the same time. It’s a similar feeling I have when scuba diving. When I flip backward from the boat into the water with all this heavy weight on my back from the tank and weights on my waist I feel completely out of control and have to push through fear and “just do it.” Once I start relaxing and simply breathe (plus a few other technical things) I am thrilled to go 60 plus feet under water because what I get to see is completely worth the effort. It’s a whole new world down there! It’s so good to push through fear and get to the other side. We are seeing God work deep things into our hearts through being in Africa. So yes, being out of control and scared is worth it. I “do it afraid” and come through the experience with peace and joy because I then find out how much bigger my God is than my “safe” path could ever let me see.
We just received an email from missionary friends in Pemba that are getting married this year and they asked us to give them premarital counseling. We feel so honored to be asked and looking forward to spending time with them.
We do miss our Pemba family. The missionaries there are all such amazing people. They are truly unsung heroes…I know they cause the heart of the Father to leap with joy and delight. His smile is upon them.
Please pray for all the homeless and hungry flood victims of Mozambique! There is detailed information and updates on the Iris website.
We have had so many wonderful connections with people as we’ve traveled. I wish we could have seen more of our friends, but time wouldn’t allow this.
It was an honor to share in homes and churches in America what the Father is doing in us through living in Africa. I am making this update short because I am finally sending photos and they capture a story sometimes better than words.

How fantastic to hear from you! You are wonderful prayer warriors and we're so thankful for your prayers. The main goal of our lives is to stay in the Lord's presence always...not that this happens, but we want it to! Two scriptures that have meant a lot to me lately are Psalm 43:4 I will go to the altar of God, To God my exceeding joy. Psalm 16:11 You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Pray this love for His presence and seeking to stay in it no matter if we're cleaning toilets (or latrines!) or enjoying a beautiful sunset. The simplicity here makes it far easier for us to enjoy His presence as there are much less distractions. I can't find "relief" in a shopping mall here so I turn my heart to God much more often in Africa. Of course, the weight of the needs of the poor and the Iris work can overwhelm, but not so when we're enjoying God! So please pray that this passion for His presence grows and grows until we're consumed by Him! Much love, Janet & Jeff
