Hot, hot, hot…that’s what the weather was when we arrived in Pemba
Glad that the temperature is starting to cool down. Now instead of two fans on us at night we only have one on now. We’re approaching winter, so we won’t need a fan much longer.
Some of you have emailed & asked us to share what a typical day is for us here. The problem with answering that question is there is no typical day! Variety is the spice of life. I can tell you that right now Jeff and I are preparing the Holy Given mission houses for about 170 students who come from all over the world. We’re in the midst of cleaning toilets, refrigerators, sweeping and spraying mattresses to kill bed bugs, scrubbing floors, replacing broken doorknobs, etc., etc. There are a lot of houses on both bases that need intense prep work. We are helping with some of admin at the school and we’ll also help with pastoral care. There are many other ways our days our spent, but this is what’s on our plate at the moment. I often ask God to fill me with joy at the beginning of the day. This is only possible if I’m drinking of the living water (John 4:14). I love to be filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18) and to have continual communion with the Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 13:12). This is available to me no matter what my days look like.
I’m reminded of the poverty here every time I go to throw something in the big garbage pit on our Iris base. The poor will follow me and take much of what I consider rubbish. Mirrors that are broken in many pieces, cracked and broken plastic toilet seats, plastic bags with holes in them, coffee cups with broken handles, empty water bottles, broken fans, etc are all considered something very valuable to them and they are grateful to have it.
We see amazing fruit from the Holy Given schools as we had no doctors at our base and we now have 3 doctors who were all past HG students. We also have a family (with 3 children and another one on the way) who were both HG students. The husband went to 1st HG school and the wife went to the 3rd one and now they live here! They are a precious family. There are also wonderful single men and women who now live in Pemba or other Iris bases, or are working with other mission organizations after attending the school.
Please keep us, and all the missionaries in prayer regarding health. We have a lot of staff that are getting malaria. One young missionary (Nikki) has been hospitalized in ICU in South Africa as she had the worst kind of malaria – cerebral malaria. Malaria is serious business as you can die from it. She’s out of ICU, but pray for there to be no kidney damage and complete recovery. We don’t fear malaria, but we know the need we have here for you to pray for us all. Pray for strength as many of the staff are feeling very fatigued. We’ve also had five (5) of the young missionary women losing hair from lack of nutrition (they are now taking lots of vitamins!).
We are going to the annual Iris staff retreat in Maputo at the end of this month. Bill Johnson from Bethel Church in Redding will be speaking. One of the main reasons we are excited about going to the retreat is that we get to be with Leroy and Cindy Metzger. Do you remember the story of how we met them? It was on one of our emails. At our daughter’s wedding in CA some friends asked us if we knew a couple named Leroy and Cindy Metzger and we said no. Our friends at the wedding told us we’d really like the Metzger’s. They told us that they were about our age, were pastors, lived in Hawaii and had sold everything to go on the mission field in Malawi, Africa. Less than 24 hours later we’re in London getting on another plane that’s taking us to our new life in Africa. We meet these strangers on the plane seated right next to us and we fell in love with them right away - we were very much kindred spirits. They had just left Norway as they were visiting one of their kids. Finally we asked them their names and we could hardly believe it – the Metzgers! We told them that this was such a God set up to meet them. We all 4 knew that we were destined to meet again and we’ve stayed in contact through email. They emailed us several months ago with this news: They aren’t working at Iris, but recently they were asked to help out for a season at the Iris base in Malawi & they were then invited to come to the staff retreat in Mozambique. So that’s how we are ending up getting to see them again!
God knew how much I needed this divine appointment with the Metzger’s on the plane in London, as our first week in Pemba was hell on earth for me. I kept thinking, “Well Lord, there is another crazy couple doing the same thing we’re doing…thank you God that we’re not the only couple on this planet doing the illogical!” (God is beyond logic. He is spiritual!) The Metzger’s like a quote that we like too, “Normal is Over!” I’m so thankful for the goodness of God in giving us wonderful friendships all over the world.
I’m going to end with a quote that makes me smile. I just read it on a friend’s website who is serving the poor at an Iris base in Sudan (Paul is all by himself at this base, but help is on the way!).

On those hot days you must have fond memories of the fogy summer days we shared in Daly City and Pacifica. Just think of those cool damp mornings and cover your head with a wet towel!

Hi Tony & Candy,
The retreat was awesome. Best part was connecting with friends, especially Leroy & Cindy! We were so inspired by the missionaries stories from other bases throughout the world - we were in the company of such amazing folks who have sacrificed so much to share the gospel with the poor and yet they have much joy - they are my heroes.
Rolland Baker shared and Jeff and I felt his message was the most anointed. He gave the prophetic word that was needed for Iris. He challenged us all to have pure hearts as this is the sure sign of revival. I was a puddle of tears on the floor as I felt God's love and holiness as Rolland shared.
It was great to hear from you! We love you!! Janet and Jeff

Rach forwarded me your e-mail to her. I want to be on the mailing list too. I'd have written you there but I don't have your e-mail either. Not sure I want to POST my e-mail for all to see though, so I won't include it here. We'll figure out how to get it to you guys. We miss you guys. Last time we saw you we had just gotten set up in our little apartment in the 'ghetto'/barrio of Santa Rosa. Now we've been here for over 7 1/2 months. We have some really awesome testimonies of God's love and power. We have been under pretty constant attack. Witchcraft is our primary enemy, and mammon seems to be the prevailing stronghold here. My Spanish is coming along rapidly, and Rach is learning a little at a time. We have been mostly loving on and sharing Jesus with the kids.
We are so proud of you guys for doing what you've done. Who needs 'logic' when you can have THE HOLY GHOST! Who needs human reason when you can have the anointing from God! Many think you guys are brave souls; we see you as TRUE Followers of Jesus. You've picked up your crosses and followed the King of Glory down WHATSOEVER road He has marked out for you, regardless of the cost. This speaks VOLUMES in this day of self-preserving compromise. Your obedience will be rewarded. You two, continue to run your race with the same meekness and perseverance with which you began. You are an example and inspiration to all us your fellow brethren! Until we see your smililng faces again...

Wow, your words to us are so encouaraging! We feel very honored by them...especially coming from you as you are heroes to us as you love and serve the poor in Santa Rosa, CA!! We thank God for how your lives reflect the love of God to people and for your sacrificial life style. Isn't a life of simplicity so much richer anyways?!!
May the Holy Spirit continue to draw us closer to God's heart. May the distractions that keep us from communion with God be fewer and fewer so that we will live each day delighting in our perfect Savior.
