The Most Optimistic People in the World
I just got off the phone at Atlanta airport (March 2006) telling a friend how much I was looking forward to going back to Africa.
I was frustrated with what I was seeing going on around me. I shared with my friend how we in America are inflicted with consumerism disease. It's all about getting more things and being exhausted because we work so hard to get more "things" because we think those "things" will make us happy. People are too busy to connect with people because we're all working so hard to achieve the "American Dream" and it's killing us...spiritually and physically. We're all so tired to the bone. Mother Teresa said the poorest people she has ever met are in America...why?...she said because they are so lonely! We suffer from the poverty of loneliness. We isolate ourselves. We don't know our neighbors and they don't know us. We don't even really know the people we sit down next to in church...this would take too much of our time...we're too tired to help someone other than ourselves. We're too busy trying to achieve, to fill the loneliness with things, when God wants to fill us with His love, peace and joy! His joy is better than all the riches this world has to offer. God is longing to fill us with His joy. He desires that we would drink from the well that never runs dry, that we would experience His love so fully that we would spend the rest of our lives consumed with trusting and pleasing Him.
After sharing with my friend my desire to get back to Africa I hopped on the plane from Atlanta to PA. There was a gentleman sitting next to me that was reading the New York Times and the title of an article (dated Mar.5th, 2006) in the paper grabbed my attention: "Misery Loves Optimism in Africa" by Lydia Polgreen. I asked the man if I could borrow the paper and he kindly said I could keep it. The article spoke about the devastating suffering going on in places like the Sudanese region of Darfur. Polgreen spoke about their optimism:
"Where does such relentless optimism in the face of unyielding misery come from? One glance at the statistical profile of the continent's 900 million people will tell you that Africans can expect to live the shortest lives, earn the lowest incomes and suffer some of the worst misrule on the planet. They are more likely than anyone on earth to bury their children before the age of 5, to become infected with H.I.V., to die from malaria and tuberculosis, to require food aid."
"Yet a recent survey by Gallup International Association of 50,000 people across the world found that Africans are the most optimistic people in the world. Experts at Gallup International have grappled with the meaning of the data, which seem counterintuitive, but turn out to be consistent over time and in many places that have suffered through catastrophe...Religion doubtless plays a role. Other Gallup International surveys have found that Africa is the most religious continent..."We have our faith, if nothing else," said the Rev. Joseph Ezeugo, pastor of Immaculate Heart Parish in Onitsha, Nigeria. Not far from the church where he spoke were dozens of charred bodies, the victims of sectarian violence. "We can find hope in faith," he said, "even if there is darkness all around us."
The article shares about the life of another man, Hissein Mostapha, who has suffered ceaseless attacks in Ade, a border town in Chad. So great was the danger there that he had sent his wife and children to a town farther west. The author goes on to say: "I was in search of a safe place to sleep in a perilous land. Mr. Mostapha, a minor town official, offered me what little hospitality he could: a patch of earth on which to sleep beneath the stars, a communal bowl of stew and porridge shared among all those assembled within his compound, a few cups of hot tea. Grateful for all, the next morning I thanked him for his hospitality.
"I only wish you could have been here with my wife and my children," he said, his eyes just as expressive as his words. "Then you would see the happy life we have here. Even when we suffer, we have joy."
God wrecks me in Africa. Jeff and I often say that we don't go to Africa to "fix Africa," but we go to there for "Africa to fix us!" When you are in Africa and you see the extreme poverty and along side this you see the joy the African's have, you just can't help but be humbled and learn much from them. Their faith in God and their joy in the midst of untold suffering, are examples to change this heart of mine...and their simplicity of lifestyle helps my distracted heart to remember what really matter's in this small time I've got on planet earth.
Guy Chevreau wrote a book called "Turnings." Here's a few words from his book:

TURNINGS grows out of a disturbing discovery: the Kingdom belongs to the children; the poor possess the Kingdom; those working for righteousness inherit the Kingdom, and the rich have to try to enter, if they can.
Please keep us in prayer. Prayer is the greatest gift you can give us. We will face many challenges and we will be stretched like never before as we spend the next 7 months in Mozambique. The joy of the Lord is our strength.
